Me:
I started sewing when I was a pre-teen. My legs were long and clothes never fit. I began doing miniscule embroidery work in college because it was a cheap hobby and helped me cope with rapid thoughts and melancholy. Embroidery is both addictive and tedious, and it's also therapeutic.
In 2010 I co-founded The Fabrica, a collectively run community textile and sewing shop. I bought the first ten machines for $200 from a man named Jacky Hands, who was on his deathbed. He also gave me a collection of cast-iron pans because why not? After two years helping manage and staff the Fabrica, I left to pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work. I graduated with an MSW from San Jose State University in 2015 and now provide therapy to people dealing with incarceration.
Art and Music have always been deeply healing for me. Research in the social sciences these days indicates that resiliency that comes from art, skills, music, and community is highly correlated to an individual's resiliency. I hope to spread more resiliency as I keep on the planet. Wish me luck.
