Richard Scarry-a-day
These images are taken from Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever. It contains more than 1400 illustrated objects, somewhat like a dictionary. Scarry uses animals in place of humans frequently. One interesting part of the book is that some of the animals are anthropmorphized (Pig flying a light plane, Walrus as a dental hygenist), while the rest remain animal "workers" or what I refer to as "common animal laborers" (ex. Milk Cow, all the typical "zoo animals").

Bird-a-day
Bird-a-day
These Birds are adapted from David Allen Sibley's Field Guide for North American Birds. I met Sibley at a book signing in Santa Cruz and had him sign an embroidered Magpie. He was nonplussed by the request and didn't even flinch.

Breakfast-a-day
For Breakfast Fun-a-day, I sent 31 self-addressed stamped postcards to 31 friends requesting they return the card with a note about their breakfast happenings that day. On my end, I guaranteed that I would embroider each breakfast. Everyone returned the card. Many, many people had eaten elaborate breakfasts, making me pause to think they had gone out of their way for this postcard game. Several cards were sparse, with simple breakfasts (ex. plain, unsalted oatmeal), for which I was thankful.

Go Slow Go Slow is based off of a collection of American folk music songs for children. The songs were compiled by the Smithsonian and featured well-known artists performing little known songs, often in front of a live child audience. Leadbelly performed Ha Ha This-a-Way, Ella James sang Pole, Pole (Go Slow, Go Slow), Ella James on Miss Mary Mack, and Odetta singing The Fox.
